What kind of "Black Tetra"? There are Black Neons, Black Phantoms, Black Skirts... The one thing the females of the 3 listed species have in common is a swollen stomach (because they are carrying eggs). The stomach will be swollen outwards from just below their eye all the way to their anal fin. Black Phantom females will show more red on their fins than males. Email me if you have any questions.

EDIT: Okay, for the Black Widow/Skirts, the females will be much wider and more circular (when viewed from the side) than the males. Also, females tend to have a more heart-shaped tail while males have tails with less of an indentation in the middle. A female's stomach will be much lighter in color than a males will, too.

EDIT 2: Males are actually more pale with the female having both darker fins, and darker stripes.

Males are a little more colorful and fins a bit more exaggerated, but if you want a definitive way to sex them, run a wet finger across the anal fin of a netted fish. If it's a male, your finger will catch on tiny hooks on the fin that the male uses to keep the female nearer during spawning. They are not visible to the eye, but they can be felt by this method.
