There are many reasons. Take your pick.
We have enemies in the world. Some of them are of our own making, some of them are because our enemies are nuts.
When we have enemies ... bin Laden delcared war on America in 1998 ... he did not keep it a secret ... no one took him seriously ... well after 9/11 they took him seriously.
Think of something like a work of art
Some people make art that is beautiful
Some people delight in causing pain
I mean look at what the pedophiles do.
I am sure they see nothing wrong with their destruction of a beautiful child's future.
People who want to hurt America will target what they think are symbols of America's power
* Sears Tower for example was targeted in WW II, but prevented by a vlunteer double agent who told the FBI

Purportedly, Al-Quaida's twisted sacrilige of Islam has it's believers bitterly opposed to "capitalism". And in bin Laden's eyes, what jucier a target than New York's World Trade Center Towers?
But I think it was Al-Quaida's members themselves who were puppet manulipated by bin Laden--who had OTHER resentful reasons to target the WTC towers. Bin Laden, despite his appearance, quietly enjoyed being a son of exorbant mega wealth from his large family of overseas bankers.
Theory holds there was a bitter family feud amongst the bin Laden family tree---and Osama was dry cut off from the money pipe cold; likely because he proved he was mentally unstable (one can only wonder why). Osama may have felt his family's betrayal was influenced by American political facets....and so you have a plausible explanation why he caused 9/11/01.
