Western (English) and traditional Ibo (African) cultures are in conflict. The obvious conflict is between the English colonial administrators/evangelists and the people of Umuofia.
The underlying conflict concerns enforcement and imposition of foreign cultural mores and ideological precepts on a people. But take note that the writer skillfully avoids glorifying traditional customs nor the new impending cultural values.
