we are what we are because what we are is based on what we do to become what we are since what we are is what we do and what we feel to be what we are.
we are where we are because where we are just happens to be where we are when we think about where we are or it's because where we are is from where we were and then getting to where we are is because of what we are and what we were.

there was a series by a Dr Massey that we sat through during what was referred to as race relations by the Army back in the 80 s.
He discussed the topic quite thoroughly, that our surroundings both in society as a whole and the fact that frequently a child will emulate parental ideals, in thought and deed as to how we see the world, not just in human ties but in religious beliefs.
"why we are what we are is where we were when"
Of course society has changed pretty drastically since the 80 s because numerous societal revolutions.
Wars, politics, religion, the onset of the information age also tie into what we are and/can be.

You are who you are. Nobody can really change that, unless you take drugs or go get surgery.
You can choose where you want to be at, there's nobody deciding where you can't go.

Why is a truly pointless question that we all engage in. It's a great to continue to think though.
Why we are...if don't make negative judgments about ourselves, this issue is moot.
Thinking about why we are where we are is to avoid being engaged in one's environment to the preference of being in one's head engaged in thought.

According to The Tao, things are the way they are because thats the way they are supposed to be. That applies to people as well.
