Don't put yourself in dangerous situations

Be aware of your surroundings.

Keep your doors and windows locked. If you have a sliding glass door, put a stick in the track at the bottom of the door so it can't be opened.

Install a security system in your home.

Get a dog - even a small one. It's not for the dog to be mean and attack. Even a 2 lb dog will bark if it hears someone trying to break in - you just need the dog to alert you to a problem so you can call 911 or get out of the house.

Trim bushes that are under the windows of your home so they don't provide hiding places for bad guys.

Plant poison ivy under the windows of your home (bad guy ain't gonna want to go though that to break in - of course you are not going to weed that flower bed either). If you don't want to do poison ivy - how about the holly bushes with the sticker leaves.

Install motion lights on the exterior of your home.

Get to know your neighbors. If they know your habits and you know theres - you can keep an eye on each other and see when something does not look right.

Park your car near the entrance of the buidling in a well lit area.

As soon as you get in your car -lock your doors- keeps bad guys from opening your door to attack you.

Take your keys out of your purse and put them in your hand before you leave the building. That way, you don't stand in a parking lot digging your keys out of your purse while bad guy attacks you. While walking to your car - hold you car key between your fingers and another key between 2 other fingers - if you are attacked - the keys can be used as a weapon - will hurt bad guy a lot more if you punch him with your keys between your fingers than with bare knuckles. If you have to defend yourself - aim for senstive areas: eyes - if bad guy can't see you it makes it hard for him to chase you, knee caps- don't kick him in the family jewels - kick hard in the knee cap - if you break his knee cap - it makes it really hard for him to run after you.

Walk with your head up and alert. Keep looking around you at all times. Makes it harder for bad guy to sneak up on you if you are alert and looking around.

Consider a self defense or martial arts class.

Do not give out your personal information. Esp. to anyone over the internet.

Invest in a good shredder. Shred credit card offers and all old mail/bills that has account numbers on it.

Maybe she should be careful but that still doesn't remove the blame from the strange man who harmed her. I don't know why some people want to make excuses for monsters. No matter what the women did she didn't ask to be attacked. The rapist made that choice all on his own and he deserves ALL of the blame. How can it be sexism toward men? As a man women don't have to watch themselves around me like i'm some kind of tiger that might attack them if he sees meat. I can't believe most men are such wimps they would act that way either. Men don't attack Rapists attack. They arent the same thing. If there are men out their who really think women need to protect them from themselves by covering up or not acting flirty then please get help your seriously not well.

To be honest with you, this question can be a moral one or a common sense one. If you do not want crime to happen to you, you stay away from people who you perceive to be lawless. Pick your friends wisely. Or you can stay away from places that you can remember from hearing in the news were you might think a crime could happen. John Mayer may have been talking about the world changing in a sense of what we find in the Bible. (my have, I don't know were his mind was when put that phrase in his song.)

Smart, rational, and responsible adults should consider getting personal firearms after learning how to handle them safely and effectively.

For defense against home invasion, personal firearms are good protection, as are burglar alarms, big dogs, and signs ("This house protected by a[n] alarm system / 357 magnum / video security system.")

For protection away from home, mace or pepper spray and an audio alarm are helpful; you should in general carry yourself with authority, be aware of your surroundings and ready to respond.

Statistics show counties where concealed weapons are permitted have much less crime. Also you don't hear of the statistics that show how many crimes guns actually stop.

Don't act like a crime victim. Some times you CAN rob them, they usually don't go to the police.

Arm yourself!!!

Many states now allow law abiding citizens to carry concealed pistols legally.

Despite the propaganda that you have been fed your entire life it will make you safer.

When criminals are interviewed they say that their biggest professional hurdle is not the Police but the fear that their victims may be armed.Predators do not like prey that fights back.
