Take this sample box score for instance:
1st Period
New Jersey hooking - 2 min 1:32, J. Viuhkola served by O. Malmivaara
NY Rangers interference with goaltender - 2 min 6:06, S. Avery served by I. Baranka
New Jersey kneeling - 2 min 11:15, M. Rupp served by O. Malmivaara
New Jersey cross check - 2 min 12:42, V. Vishnevski served by O. Malmivaara
NY Rangers boarding - 2 min 14:34, D. Kasparaitis served by I. Baranka
2nd Period
NY Rangers holding the stick - 2 min 3:17, A. Anisimov served by I. Baranka
NY Rangers slashing - 2 min 9:40, B. Shanahan served by I. Baranka
NY Rangers holding - 2 min 15:37, H. Jessiman served by I. Baranka

Every New Jersey penalty says served by O. Malmivaara even tho he is not the one that took the penalty

And every New York penalty says served by I. Baranka even tho he did not take a penalty.

I was at that game and those 2 guys didn't even play. The ppl that took the penalties served the time themselves

I also second this, first of all its called the game summary not the "box score" ( stupid americans ). The reason they are like that is because of a typo. The summary has to go thorugh soo many people that therea are some mistakes in who served the penatly or who got the assist on that goal etc.

This has been brought up several times in the last few days, it's a typo

Fugu, the NHL has had box scores since the dawn of time. After each game, the home team transmits the box score to the league, and transmits a summary of the box score to local papers.

1. The box score is the official record of an NHL game
- the box score lists ice time for each player, shots by each player, penalties, etc

2. The summary is an unofficial record of an NHL game suitable for public consumption.
- the summary just lists the time of each goal, who scored, and who assisted, and the time of the penalty, who took it, etc.

the place are those container scores from? needless to say a participant serves a goalies penalty or sits for a participant who gets the boot or too many adult men and so on yet I quite have in no way heard of this manner of component. must be a typo.

1. Who cares? It's pre-freakin' season!

2. They are game summaries. What is this with Americans and "box scores" for what most call game summaries? The only box scores, even for American sports, are seen in baseball.

Probably the dude that wrote it trying to get his name in or something. Yeah you have to serve your own penalty, other then goalies for obvious reasons, so who knows what idiot was writing that game summary and writing that.

It's a great maneuver! Penalties can be served by other guys so that the best of the best can play. Smart hockey!!!
