US Congressional Committees have recommended that women be allowed to participate in all combat roles in the US military, but Congress refuses to implement the changes. When will we ever get equality with a Congress like this? When will we catch up with other countries?
News today: A Israeli military study calls for opening all combat roles to Israeli women, including women and men being required the same enlistment period of 3 years:
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/09/17/africa/ME-GEN-Israel-Women-in-Uniform.php
The article implies that women must meet the same standards as men, to be considered for combat roles; but they will no longer be automatically excluded from combat roles.
When will the US Congress allow US women to serve in all combat roles, that they are qualified for? And require women to register for selective service, like men?

I wonder. This has come up a couple of times before Congress in the past, and has been shot down each time. Benevolent sexism...what crap.
I don't believe that ANYONE should have to sign up for Selective Service, but I think that if men have to, women should, too. Once women are allowed to serve in all combat roles, Selective Service will follow.

No.As a former Infantry Officer,I do not see this being implemented.I do not for see the standards being lowered.I dont't think we can afford compromising standards. We are not created equal.Men are generally stronger than females which some people refuse to believe. An Ifantryman in the field wears close to 90Lbs.How many females can do this.Few and far between and no matter how you feel about this experiment it won't work and it will lead to more attrition among women to get out of the Miltary.A tank throws a track in combat. It takes the entire crew to repair the track.Ittakes a lot of strength. If a woman can't load a 90 lb shell in combat and puts my tank at risk.she just destroyed the effective combat effectiveness of my tank.

My mother has said that she believes this is the real reason the draft hasn't been brought back. In order to avoid discrimination, women would also have to be drafted and there are too many people who don't like that idea. I admit I suspect there is another reason it hasn't been brought back. During the Vietnam War, the National Guard units were used as a way for the rich and powerful to keep their own sons out of combat. Now, those units are filled with regular people and expelling them to make room for the rich kids would cause a major public outcry and be a public relations disaster.

I am ex-Army and to tell you the truth, I used to be against females in combat. Actually women in the military. One of the reasons is that the women had to meet lower physical standards than men. However, if the congress does away with seperate standards for woman and men, then I would be all for it.

I figure it'll happen when we elect a female President and she makes it an order and ignores Congress. As Commander in Chief I think she might get away with it. Anyhow, it should be an interesting constitutional crisis. My money's on the commander of the tanks.

AMEN, sister!
Our country is backward in many ways. It's really almost embarrassing.
EDIT: I'm with "sadbutyou"...women should be allowed as long as they pass the same requirements as men (no lowering of physical standards)!

I think that Congress is more concerned with when to bring the military home than which ones of them should be allowed to fight. I imagine they'll save it for when the war is over.

Congress is generally supposed to reflect the views of their constituents - and I don't believe there is overwhelming public support for such a regulation.
Perhaps we could allow women to have combat roles if they promise not to tell that they are women?
