My mother always said that you are always given what you can handle... and it is your time to die when you are given more than you can handle... but there is no way for you to know that you can't handle it unless you try...

That's a really very interesting question....
I've been asking that question a very long time and no answer came to my thought until i get to read yours.
Well, thinking about it, it really is a very complex question... You may answer it in different aspects. However, i choose my own opinion. Physically, we will all go on until our heart stops pumping and the like... true... but we can actually intervine, don't we? Through science and modern technology, we can prolong the life of someone dying... or shorten our own life... you know...
But... how long will we go on? How long will we bear the burden of life? How long shall we enjoy the gifts of being human? I say until we get to understand what we were made for... our purpose of being alive and until we get to satisfy that obligation imposed upon us by whoever it may be. So, just move on, do whatever that makes you happy and relevant.... live!
