Definately do not pay. AVG from Grisoft is free and in tests performs better than the ones you pay for. I also agree with poster who recommends Spybot, also free. Those two have worked for me. I got AVG when I had a virus McAfee would not find but I knew was on my computer because I saw programs running that I did not initiate. AVG found and removed it and I've used it ever since.

I use AVAST... (free)

A rich featured antivirus app, multiple shields included for maximum protection, real-time scanning, lots of neat extras you can tweak around, great for almost every level of computer users, has IM shield, browser shield and realtime protection, and not a memory hog

I say forget it. The only way you can get reliable anti-virus/spyware/adware is if you pay for it. I use Norton Antivirus, and it works quite well.
