If not what circumstances would cause the parting, and will they retire his number? I know he has a long career ahead of him, just wondering about the future. Do athletes stay with the same team their whole careers anymore anyhow?

Without a doubt he will never play or manage in another uniform. He bleeds Yankee blue.
They already have his # retired its just about having a ceremony now. He and Bernie may be the last two of thier kind to stay with one team for thier entire careers.

Well, you know, after Bernie Williams' rather flip dismissal, I am not so sure. Bernie deserved his shot for services rendered. He deserved a chance because the fans really loved him. Now, when Derek Jeter loses a step or two, will the Yankees fire him, too? If so, then I hope he plays for another team. I know baseball is a business but it's the business of entertainment so sometimes heartlessness is bad.

In the era of free agency it is rare to see any player stay with one team their entire career. However, having said that, there are a few very special players that will always remain with one team. Derek Jeter is one of them. Like Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Thurman Munson, Whitey Ford, Bernie Williams, and Ron Guidry, just to name a few, Derek Jeter will join that list of immortal Yankees.

I think Derek Jeter will retire before he leaves the Yankees. He is a Yankee legend, and his number will be retired. No doubt.

There's no way he would turn his back on the Yankees after being named Captain. Only eleven players have been Yankee captain and the list includes guys like Ruth and Gehrig!

If he doesn't see what a big honor that is for him and isn't encouragement enough for him to stay, then he has serious problems.
