The terms "near East" and "far East" were coined by the British. From the UK, you go East to get to either. Since the UK is east of the US and you are going west, you get to the "far East" before you get to the "near East".

depends, of course on where you start. from the west coast of the USA it's between 8600 and 11000 miles to reach the "far east".
