Right click the My Computer icon, left click Properties from the menu that appears.
In Windows 98, click the Device Manager tab.
In Windows XP, click the Hardware Tab, and the Device Manager Button.
Click the plus to expand "Display Adapters".
Right click and uninstall your display adapter.
Reboot, and Windows should reinstall the driver.
When you're rebooted, right click in the middle of the desktop, left click properties, click the settings tab, and adjust the resolution as you like.
Click apply, click ok, and reboot.

The first thing I would check is the video drivers.

First, right-click on a blank space on the desktop (anywhere that doesn't have icons) and click properties.
You can also get to this place by going into the Control Panel and then clicking on Display Settings.
Once in here, click on the Settings tab. You should see a slider to switch from 640x480 to something higher... If you cannot go any higher then this is a good indication that your video drivers are corrupted.

If you know the manufacturer of your video card (for instance nvidia) then download the newest drivers for your video card and for your operating system version and reinstall them.. tis should fix your problem.

If you don't know what kind of video card you have.. you can look at your hardware settings (right-click My Computer > properties > hardware) and look for video card or you can go to the manufacturer website of your computer (ie, support.dell.com) and they will usually have all drivers for your computer there.

good luck.

On your desktop, anywhere left click to get you to the "properties" menu. Click on settings and select 1024 X 768 pixels. On the "Appearance" tab, select the color that you like.

Try reinstalling the video drivers. I've had this happen when I play games and they crash. A reboot usually fixes it, but sometimes doesn't. Always good to have the latest version of your video drivers anyways ☺
