The book, Women who run with the wolves, has a story in it called SealSkin. I need to know WHY the seal is used as a symbol for the wild soul.

Because of the freedom of the seal. Also the ocean symbolizes the subconscious. I loved that book.

It has been thus for centuries. If you look at folk songs and tails, you will find stories of silkies who come from the sea to tempt men and girls (usually put that way.)
If you go and find some video of seals that shows both their body movements and faces, you will find that it doesn't take a lot of imagination to imagine those eyes and whiskers, that mouth and nose as reflecting a personality trapped inside. And then the seal, instead of being trapped on land, can slide into the sea and escape. For those who would never dream of flying, swimming away in total freedom is wish fulfillment.
