Freedom has never been free. From the first being that had a thought to today's fights for freedom abroad, each and every person has no ability to be free without making sure that someone else does not try to take it away.
If you think about it, if everyone were free to do just what they wished, then there would be anarchy. Those who wish to kidnap and torture would be free to do so. Saddam Hussein would be within his "certain inalienable rights" to torture those who disagreed with him.
No, freedom is not free. It costs the blood of thousands, and more, free thinking worthy people who have provided their lives so that others can at least feel the perception of freedom. So that women are not raped and beaten, and stoned. So that little girls can be taught, so that men can take care of their families and make a good living. Freedom gives each of us the rights to speak our mind and make sure that everything that we should have can be provided for us.
Unfortunately money equals freedom in much of the world. The more you have, the more you can get away with. Look at OJ. When he had money, he got away with murder. Now that he has none, he can't get away with theft. Poetic justice, I think, but still. Politics, money, and power all cause freedom to be different with each passing day.
But, no, it is not free.

Sure it is. Our president has made it perfectly painless for the majority of our citizens. If the confict in Iraq wasn't in the news, most of us wouldn't even know we were involved.
No sacrifices for most Americans means that this "fight for freedom" almost feels free.
Now if we started drafting all 18 year olds, no deferments, than it would become real and Americans would start to feel the cost of freedom. The conflict in Iraq would also be over in no time.

Freedom is possible provided that society is capable of dealing with criminals.
That does not imply that there is a need to go after potential criminals. Taken to its logical extreme, that policy would mean that we throw everybody in jail. Therefore, we should only go after criminals after they commit their crimes, but they should be aware that we will catch them in order to deter them.
So, in the context of foreign policy, we should get out of the Nation-Building business immediately and we should issue a Letter of Marque and Reprisal worth $1 billion to some corporation to chase down Osama bin Laden. We should capture him, put him on trial, and give him the same trial that we would give to any American citizen who committed a murder (if we're a civilized people, we shouldn't stoop to their level to fight them).
At the moment, our freedoms are in poor shape at home, so we definitely shouldn't be trying to bring freedom to other countries. George Washington wanted us to set a good example for other countries instead of trying to make them free by force and he was right.

Freedom comes from the hand of God and no lower being has a right to take it away from us. It is "free" in origin, but we have to fight like hell to keep it. And we will.

according to our preamble to our declaration of independence:"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness". last time i checked, it was not the policies of the chenney regime that gives me freedom . may be it should say the freedom for the military and oil industries to prosper by gaining access to new conflicts , and telling their disciples that their freedom is at stake . if, that was the case, we will have the draft , everybody would defend the homeland, you would not have to spin it to get approval from our citizens, since it is us who control the military .remember , "we the people" , not the pockets of the war profiteers!

I think freedom is free no matter what the government. It can't be bought or paid for by party loyalty alone--like some Bushites believe it to be: A commodity.

We pay income tax, sales tax, property tax, etc. but I don't believe I've ever paid a freedom tax. If it's bought, it's usually bought with the lives of our troops. Sometimes wisely, sometimes not.

Huh? there is no such thing as freedom.
There are laws that restricts our freedom, and takes away our rights. And if we try to persuit freedom, the so called "law" will punish us.
