how about a really cute Care Bear. You know- The special Edition Silver Tender Heart Care Bear. It's a 20 dollar bear- but you said the baby is real special to you- the Care Bear is a special gift so it will be worth it.

I like meaningful gifts, especially at this age because the kid has no idea what's going on but can have something to look at one day and know how much she meant to you.

Maybe a gorgeous photo frame with a cute pic of you two together.
A scrapbook of your time with her. You are her nanny so you've seen much of her firsts I am sure!
There are these really nice sterling silver tooth keepers, it's more for the parent but very nice when she begins losing teeth, they will have something precious to keep them in and maybe give/show her one day
Write her a letter also, with whatever you give her, for her to open when she is older.

I really LOVE this:

It is a personalized baby "100 good wishes" quilt. It is filled with wishes that you have for the baby like health, happiness, harmony, etc and it has the baby's name and birthdate in the corner.

If I were you, I would probably get her that and a toy that she could enjoy now (she'll appreciate the quilt for years to come). If you don't like the quilt, I would still go with something personalized so it has special meaning. Search google for personalized baby gifts and you'll find a lot of great options.

Good luck!

Get the parents one of those darling plaster-of-paris kits from Wal-mart that you can make their handprints in and it sets and dries and they have it for 50 years to show the grandchildren. It is in the baby section. Would be a great keepsake for the party. Or make a small photo album of her doing her activities that she likes to do and use all those cute little album cutouts they have now.

The other suggestions look like gifts for the parents.

What 1 year olds like - push toys, dolls, stacking blocks, books, balls, simple truck/cars. But especially push toys - like those that are a stick with a toy at the bottom on wheels, they go nuts for them at this age even if they're not walking. Even the pop toy that drives all parents batty. Actually, older kids like them too - and will fight over them. (Examples listed as sources).

Dolls are good for boys and girls, ideally soft so they can kiss and squeeze - later they will play imaginative play with them but right now they like the toy to look like another baby.

Blocks are good as they will be stacking at least 2 by now - and having blocks helps her with numbers later.

Balls are good for learning physics and gross motor skills, and so are simple trucks/cars that can be moved. Books, well - so you'll read to them.

What about a 9ct gold baby bracelet. Either a bangle type or a chain one with a locket. You can engrave it too. When she grows up and has a baby girl she can give it to her daughter and then down the line it goes.

if you can afford it, take $50 and open up a savings account in the baby's name that it can have when it gets 18. you and the parents can put in money for holidays or whenever as a start for the baby's future.
