can anybody name a few non polar solvents?

If by methylated spirits you mean methanol, it is a polar solvent. Hexane and cyclohexane are good examples of a nonpolar solvent.

Edit: I have looked up methylated spirits, and it is mostly ethanol with some additives like methanol added. Ethanol is still a polar solvent.

methylated spirit is actually denatured alcohol, ethanol. denatured alcohol not in the sense its chemical structure has been altered but rather its usefulness as a beverage has been removed.

thus methylated spirit is a polar solvent

non polar solvents would be tetrachloromethane, hexane.
