As with all witty statements, it has a grain of truth.
Implicit in conservative philosophy is that it is not possible to fix what is broken. Implicit in the progressive philosophy is the concept of trying new fixes until you get it right. Of course, there is no guarantee that any particular proposed fix will work until it is tried.

Here is something to think about with regard to the evolution of a political party's platform on the environment:
Teddy Roosevelt, our 26th President, was arguably the greatest "environmental conservationist" in American political history. Heck, the man might have helped make conservation a mainstream idea. So isn't it weird how being anywhere remotely associated with the term "conservation," especially in terms of the environment, is deemed as a "liberal" idea?
Teddy was pretty progressive in his thinking and yet, as a Republican President, he wished to "conserve" the natural resources of our nation because he saw the beauty of a country not only defined by its inhabitants, but the natural habitat in which they inhabit.
I personally have an agenda to make modern-day environmentalism an ideal embraced by both red and blue alike. We can all be a shade of green, thanks to Teddy. And as much as it may be considered a "progressive" dominated issue, "conservative" and thoughtful use of our resources IS AN AMERICAN VALUE... and it is the RIGHT THING TO DO.
Don't listen to pundits... listen to the reasons why they are screaming their heads off.

LOL. By that definition our president is progressive!
Anyway the traditional definitions of liberal and conservative don't seem to work so well these days. Liberals are the ones trying to conserve the status quo. Conservatives are the radicals, trying to turn our free democracy into a fascist police state.

What is "progressive" about a political party that wants to take us back to the 1600's in our relationship with the government?
I personally don't want to be a serf.

Interesting quote. A good conversation starter, but I don't know if either half is actually "true".

Wrong on one count. Conservative learn from mistakes, Democrats reelect them.
