Just remember, what goes down might come up.... gross, but true, unfortunately.
Gelato is nice, I found ice cream tends too thick secretions. Drink, drink, drink. I know it hurts, but drink! I found cold was better than hot.
I remember (age 13) that full fat yogurt went down nicely. Just try what works. Thinner consistency is going to do better than thick cause it will take less effort to swallow. Try not to talk, it will help you heal faster.
Did the surgeon give you a handout of post op instructions? It might have some useful tips.

Mashed potatoes might stick to the wound. Try something not warm because warmth might dilate the closed blood vessels in the wound. Cold soup might help or ice cream. Why didnt you asked your doctor first before you went home? He knows best.

If you eat something really cold, like a popcicle, would help numb the pain and even help with swelling. Something warm like soup or mashed potatoes would be soothing too. But your throat is probably raw and if you eat something really warm, it might be painful.

Instead of mashed potatoes, why don't you have cream of potato soup? Mash the little squares down, if you need to, and spoon it in.

Yes, that is what my husband ate after his tonsilectomy. That and lots of ice cream and popsicles.
Some cream of soup will help, nothing with big bits in it though. Anything soft and mushy will go down a lot easier. I would suggest eating about an hour AFTER you take your Vicodin. It will help the nausea and the food won't hurt so much going down.~
