just to clarify the last point you asked, you can't find oxygen in nature as O, it is always found as O2, so that's how it has to be used in equations

Step 1. Write eqtn
2 Mg+O2 -> 2MgO
Step 2. Divide 1.5 g by 32, the mol wt of dimer O2. Call result M(O2)
Step 3. From equation M(MgO)= 2M(O2).
Step 4. Find mol wt of MgO, call it MW
Step 5. Your answer = M(MgO) * (MW)

2mg+o2--------->2mgo..............this is the reaction.magnesium molwt is 24.If 32gms of oxygen is reacting 80gms of mgo is formed.so,if 1.5g of o2 is acting nearly 1.8gms of mgo is formed................
u cant get oxygen in the form of o...in the nature so we will be taking o2 into consideration and balance the equation accordingly

ill assume that Mg (Mr=24.3) is in excess.
2Mg + O2 =2MgO

no. of moles of oxygen = 1.5/(16.0X2) = 0.04688mol
no. of moles of MgO formed = 0.04688 X 2=0.09375mol

mass of MgO formed = 0.09375 X (24.3+16.0)=3.778g
