Yes, there was persecution and disease unfortunately, but I do beileve that very few native americans were slaves, because of their very strong pride and resiliency.
They were very strong -willed ppl that had too much self-respect to do what others tried to force upon them. They chose to die rather than be used as slave labor.......kind of admirable, I think.
Read the book below, it's fascinating.

If you can decipher the import, you will find considerable insights on how the Native Americans reacted, moreover, why the Spaniards arrived in the first place, which events were not as accounts are conveyed. they welcomed them at first thinking Hernan cortes was quetzalcoatl one of their gods that had promised to arrive the same year that hernan cortes did but that is just a myth they started to die because of illnesses like smallpox n were defeated, by the spanish and some native groups that had resisted the aztecs,8 months after the first battle and how could they fight against cannons and guns so they were forced to accept them and work for the spanish as slaves..

they fought back, but the Spaniards defeated them. But Mexico fought for it's independence in the 1800s and was victorious
