I went to my friends last night and we all was talking about the changes to contraception. Some one asked about the effects of the morning after pill compared to RU486 (abortion pill.). I have searched the net for some information on it and am not having any luck. So I will ask you all.

If the morning after pill causes you to bleed wouldn't taking it when you was pregnant (like 6 weeks or more) have the same effect as RU486??

Please this isn't an abortion debate, I am pregnant and very HAPPY!
It made us think last night, and i would really like to know. Thanks gys and girls

I don't think they are. Not 100% sure.
The morning after pill is available at the pharmacy here without a prescription. BUT i believe you need a prescriptions for RU486 the i am not sure if it is available here in Australia.
There was a lot of talk about it on the television though.

The RU pill caues a medical abortion if you are less than 8 or 9 weeks pregnant i believe. The morning after pill prevents the egg from being fertilized if its in there, will stop ovulation if it has not happened, and will make the uterine lining infavorable to attachment . Oh and by the way, the morning after pill is not an abortion pill. I took it within 3 days of having unprotected intercourse..and now am 7 weeks preg lol....so nope, does not effect a pregnancy that is already taking place

No, they don't have the same effect. The morning after pill works before a pregnancy has happened to prevent it from happening. It contains high levels of progestin which does things like suppress ovulation and thin the uterine lining so that a pregnancy can't begin. It won't affect a pregnancy that has already begun though.

RU486 works after a fertilized egg has already implanted to terminate a pregnancy that has already begun. It's a combination of drugs (methotrexate and mifprestone) that terminate a pregnancy and then is followed up with a drug called misoprostol causes uterine contractions which expel the contents of the uterus. Methotrexate is also sometimes used to treat ectopic pregnancies where the tube hasn't ruptured-it terminates the pregnancy and allows it to expel without surgery.

The morning-after pill — a form of emergency birth control — is used to prevent a woman from becoming pregnant after she has had unprotected vaginal intercourse. Morning-after pills are generally considered safe, but many women are unaware that they exist. Here's how the morning-after pill works.

Human conception rarely occurs immediately after intercourse. Instead, it occurs as long as several days later, after ovulation. During the time between intercourse and conception, sperm continue to travel through the fallopian tube until the egg appears. So taking emergency birth control the "morning after" isn't too late to prevent pregnancy.

The active ingredients in morning-after pills are similar to those in birth control pills, except in higher doses. Some morning-after pills contain only one hormone, progestin (Plan B), and others contain two, progestin and estrogen. Progestin prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). Estrogen stops the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm.

The morning-after pill is designed to be taken within 72 hours of intercourse with a second dose taken 12 hours later. Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue and headache. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the morning-after pill is 80 percent effective in preventing pregnancy after a single act of unprotected sex.

Morning-after pills aren't the same thing as the so-called abortion pill, or mifepristone (Mifeprex). Emergency contraceptive pills prevent pregnancy. The abortion pill terminates an established pregnancy — one that has attached to the uterine wall and has already begun to develop.

Plan B is available to women 18 years and older without a prescription at most pharmacies. Women must show proof of age to purchase Plan B. For women 17 years old and younger, Plan B is available with a doctor's prescription.

In a nutshell---they are two different drugs. Not just two different names, but completely different ingredients and effects.

While people can argue about the possible abortifacient properties of the morning-after pill, there is no gray area at all with RU486---it definitely causes a chemical abortion.

they are completely different. the morning after pill works the same way birth control pills do. they prevent implantion of the egg. ru-486 (the abortion pill) aborts an already implanted egg.

with the morning after pill, most women have a normal period around the same time as they would every month. it's most effective if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. if you are already pregnant, the morning after pill will NOT work.

the ru-486 pill causes heavy cramping, bleeding and expulsion of the embryo. it must be used in the first 7 weeks of pregnancy.

all this info can be found on the planned parenthood site.

taking either of these pills at 6 weeks or more will not terminate the pregnancy as far as i know, i think you have to take them shortly after you have unprotected sex. at least that is the case with the morning after pill, which is basically just a really high dose of the birthcontrol pill. i havent heard too much about the RU486 pill, but i think its about the same concept.

i've got met physicians that have self belief even an IUD is a style of abortion. Any technique that forestalls a fertilized egg from persevering with to boost may be risk-free. What a lot of human beings do no longer understand is the that there are a great style of fertilized aggs that for sure in no way impant, and the style of spontaneous miscarriages is a particularly great quantity. ultimately, i think of many faiths (yet no longer all) are adversarial to something that a) prevents the enlargement of the style of tithe-paying individuals of a faith from becoming; and b) helps women human beings to have greater advantageous administration over their lives. remember, "The hand that rocks the cradle, policies the international." in case you administration the hand that rocks the cradle, you administration the international. The good judgment is unquestionably there...
