3^-4 = 1/81

*since x^-1 = 1/x

so 3^-4 = 1/3^4

1/ (3x3x3x3) = 1/81

1/(9x9) = 1/81

1/81 = 1/81

b^x = n
expressed in logarithmic form is
log base-b n = x

The b is written as a subscript, but I don't know how to do that here. Sorry.

log base-3 (1/81) = -4
log base-3 1 - log base-3 81 = -4

3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81.
That's 3 to the 4th power.
A negative power is simply dividing 1 by that number.
So 3 to the negative 4th power is 1 / (3 x 3 x 3 x 3).

this is most typically written out like: 3^(-4) = 1/81

when you have any number raised to a NEGATIVE power, you basically do the same thing as if it were a positive number, but put that number over one in fraction form.

3^4 = 3*3*3*3 = 81

so 3^(-4) = 1/81

another example, just to be clear would be: 2^(-3)

it would be 1/8, as 2^3 = 8, but the negative power puts it in the denomitator.

3^4 is equal to 81 but since the exponent is negative, it will be 1/81...

to explain further...
Since exponents are another way to write multiplication and the negative is in the exponent, to write it as a positive exponent we do the multiplicative inverse which is to take the reciprocal of the base. Thus;

x^-n=1/x^-n... hope this will help: )
