A combustion reaction involves the reaction of a substance with oxygen gas. The complete combustion of any hydrocarbon (binary compound of carbon and hydrogen) produces carbon dioxide and water as the only products. Octane is a hydrocarbon that is found in gasoline. Complete combustion of octane produces 8 liters of carbon dioxide for every 9 liters of water vapor (both measured at the same temperature and pressure). What is the ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms in a molecule of octane?

Ratio is incorrect. Write the balanced reaction equation and apply Avogadro’s hypothesis.

Boy, that's a big fat one. The ratio is correct. For each carbon, one liter of CO2 is produced. Thus, the 9 liters of vapor must 18 hydrogens. The compound is C8H18 (with isomers), and the ration of C to H is 4:9.

Let octance be CxHy
, where x and y are integers

CxHy + O2 --------> CO2 + H2O

since ratio of volume of gases = ratio of volume of moles,

equation is now:
CxHy + O2 -------->8 CO2 + 9 H2O

so to balance the equation, x becomes 8 and y becomes 18
C8H18 + 12.5O2 -------->8 CO2 + 9 H2O
2C8H18 + 25O2 -------->16CO2 + 18H2O
