It is probably more accurate to say that hot or warm water can sometimes make ice cubes faster than cold. As a few other people have already linked to the Mpemba Effect, I won't do so. But if you read up on this effect, you will see that, while it has certainly been demonstrated, it has never been conclusively explained.

But if you want to know how true it is, you can try it yourself. Assuming that is, that you have access to hot and cold water, ice cube trays, and a freezer. And a clock, of course.

My dad said the same thing but I thought he was full of crap because it made no sense to me - then until I read up there about the "Mpemba Effect" - unbelievable!

Clearly an 80 degree batch of water will not freeze faster than a 35 degree batch - I wonder at what temperature delta the break even point is...

I'd have to say no...but hey, I'm no chemist.

My reasoning would be in this: Water has to get to 0 degrees to freeze. It would have to loose energy until it gets to that point (freezing point).
It is true that water starting at 20 degrees would start off cooling faster than water starting at 10 degrees---the greater the difference between temps, the faster something cools/warms. But the thing is...the water starting at 20 degrees will reach 10 degrees and it's rate of cooling will slow down...and by the time it gets there, the water starting at 10 degrees will already be at maybe 6 degrees.

I'd have to say the water starting cold will freeze faster.

this is an city delusion that warm water freezes quicker than chilly.at some degree in the freezing technique the nice and comfortable water turns into chilly water. using it in basic terms wastes a cent's quite worth or so of potential. yet once you prefer sparkling ice cubes without air bubbles, use water that has recently been boiled.

NO! Water that has been heated will freeze faster than water of the same temperature that has not been heated.

The reason is that the heating process drives out dissolved gases which cause water to freeze at a slightly lower temperature than purer water..

This is a myth -- cold water freezes faster. Water freezes at 0 degrees C, so if the water is just a few degrees above that, it won't take long for it to cool down to zero and begin freezing. If the water is warm, it takes much longer for it to cool down to zero.

yes it will. it is because of newton's law of cooling. it states the rate of cooling or heating of a body is proportional to the temperature difference between the body and its surroundings. it means that greater the temperature difference greater will be the rate of cooling or heating. so when u place hot water inside the freezer for making it into ice cubes, the temperature difference between hot water and freezer temperature is greater than that will be if normal or cold water's placed. so it gets cooled rapidly giving ice quicker than normal or cold water.

No, when water is hot hydrogen bonds cannot hold because there is so much energy. When the energy is gone, the molecules can then hold on to each other.
