I went to the doctor and he said i was at minus three station in my labor and i forgot to ask what that meant. I am dialated 2 and 50% effaced and was just wondering about this.

When the doctor talks about station he is telling you where the baby's head is in the pelvis in relation to your pelvic bones. Level with the spine is 0 so if you are at -3 your baby is higher in the pelvis. Once you get past 0 (in the negatives) your baby is dropping. At +5 the baby crowns.

The station refers to how high (or low) the baby's head is in side the pelvis, in relation to two bony prominences called the ischial spines. The level of the spines is considered station 0. The numbers are measured in centimeters, so a -1 would be 1cm ABOVE the level of the ischial spines, a +4 would be 4cm BELOW. +5 is considered crowning.

A -3 station means your baby's head is pretty high in the pelvis right now.

Station refers to the baby's placement. It means he's head down, but not engaged in the birth canal fully. I think it goes to station +5, which is crowning. -1 is a baby who's not even head down or dropped.
