I pay less than $500 monthly mortgage payment on a 3 BR, 2 bath house on about a 1 acre lot in rural S.C. We bought it 17 years ago, though, so we'd be paying twice as much to buy the same house now.

I bought my house in San Francisco 14 years ago, the mortgage was $1400/month, I had paid it off. and the value of the house had gone up almost 4 times. I have another house about 40 minutes drive from SF, I bought it in year 2000, the mortgage now is $2900, and the house is not as nice as the one in SF but doubled it's value since then.

you can't compare like this because every residence is different....like efficiency, studio, 1BR, 2BR, 2BR w/den, 3BR, 4BR (some with 2 bath, some on the lake, some on the first floor and some on the second floor, some on the parking lot and each is a different price) and so on for apartments and then there are homes of all sizes.
