A major theme is the film was the role of women in society. Julia Roberts plays a teacher who tries to encourage free thinking and break her girls away from the notion that a woman's place is as a homemaker. I haven't seen the film in a while, but it seemed as though the ideal of woman devoting all time and effort to home and husband was supported by society in general. I believe in the film, the teacher was fired for her radical views.
