Once we got my one year old on table food she started to have diapers with whole food in it. I have seen her pass whole chunks of apple, whole pieces of cheese, and just today she ate mandarin oranges and they were only broken up into the pieces she chewed them into. There were little pieces of mandarin oranges all through her diaper. Is this normal? Should I get the doctor to test a stool sample?

No its normal. She's not chewing, and because so much of her diet is still fluid is just flushes it out of her.

My son poops out veggies just like they go in. Especially when I first give them to him, or when he's not paying attention to chew. He's 8 months.

Some foods like corn really do not digest completely in any human's digestive tract. The food that should be digesting in her, however, is not digesting completely but this is not unusual for her age. If she has more than eight teeth, she is ready for solid foods but some children still don't chew their food enough at first. I suggest that you take more time to shred her food or cut it up into smaller pieces. I know that this can be more work but it will insure that she is getting more nutrition in her diet. Cut grilled chees snadwhiches into small squares as big as your thumb nail. Instead of whole chunks of cheese, shred the cheese and form it into a ball. When she bites the ball, it will fall apart. You can also do this with apples, beleive it or not. It can get a little messy but the bottom line is that you will make it easier for her until she is a little older and chews her food better. This will help reduce risks of choking and it will also help the food to digest more completely in the stomach. Also, try playing chewing games with her. Youngsters LOVE to play games and act like animals. Play the "Chew Like A ____" game. You pick an animal and show her how that animal chews his food. She will mimic you and she may keep the food in her mouth longer. This need not teach bad mannors. She can still learn to chew with her lips closed and she is more likely to do that if you model the action. Once she has been playing this game with you for a couple weeks or so, try offering foods that are simpply cut instead of shredded and see how she does. It may be that you will only need to make the extra effort of shredding and cutting her food until she has learned to chew through the fun chewing game. Let her take as long as she needs and have fun with the chewing game. All learning is really just a game at that age and they soak up learning like it is more fun than a barrel of monkies!

For more great ideas, the classic book called Feed Me, I'm Yours by Vicki Lansky, is a wonderful choice! It was around when my baby sister was teething and it is still the best thing I know for advice on feeding good foods to kids and babies.
