in order of "arrival"
Beatles
Stones
The Who
Pink Floyd
Led Zepplin

not The Monkees,The Doors or Queen (monkees not popular enough,The Doors popularity took a while to build and Queen arrived on the scene a wee bit later)

all of the above bands began in the 60's and peaked (except the beatles) in the early 70's.

Queen was not around in the late 60's! Jesus, Night at the Opera with Bohemian Rhapsody came out on vinyl around 76 or so, and that was the one that really put them on the map. Not the Monkees, probably Pink Floyd, or the Doors. Chicago had a big following at that time too. So did Dylan, for that matter, but he probably doesn't count as a "band". Ayone else from that age care to comment?

Well most rock critics/snobs usually list the Big Four: Beatles, Stones, Who, Dylan. But you could easily add to that list: Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Doors (though they weren't really that popular in the '60's- in fact they were MORE popular after Jim's death). Although Led Zeppelin began in the 60's, they really were a 70's band. The Monkees could be considered as they were VERY popular, but so were Tommy James & the Shondells, Creedence Clearwater Revival.

I've never heard of a "5", I've heard of the Big 3 of the 60's and the Big 3 of the 70's.

60's:
The Who
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones

70's:
The Who
Pink Floyd
Led Zepplin

Wait, that is five bands, as the Who is on twice, so yeah, there's your five right there.
