Wash all clothes in cold water as hot sets stains in if anything has a spill or stain. Hot water for bed sheets as it kills the bed bugs.

The temperature of the wash water affects the performance of the detergent to some degree. However, water temp is not as important as it once was. Only very dirty items like work denim need hot water cleaning. Most clothing can be washed in cold water. It's the hot dryer that causes shrinkage more often than hot wash water. Hot water is more likely to cause fading of colors, and conversely may also set in any stains.

I sort and wash my clothes according to color and texture. I wash my bath towels separately from clothing, as the towels shed lint that would end up all over the clothes if washed together. I don't use bleach on whites unless they are stained, because bleach degrades the fabric even when used in moderation. I wash all denim together. I wash lighter weight fabrics together. I wash knit and woven dark colors together until I'm sure they won't bleed.

Washing your clothes inside-out will preserve the original color longer. The abrasion of the clothes against each other and the washing machine interior causes some color loss. This is especially true of printed fabrics, and t-shirts with a design. These prints are often on the surface only, and therefore more vulnerable to abrasion.

I've been washing clothes for 40 years.- using cold water only. It has been proven the use of hot or warm water for washing makes no difference. It used to be thought that the hotter the water temperature the more germs you would kill. The quality of wash powder/liquid is the key to clean wash and using oxyclean for stains. Some clothes will "run" no matter what the water temperature. Sorting out the colours, from the whites, from the darks and red is a must. Well, back to the washing -2 full loads a day, 6 days a week UGH!!!

Think more about what kind of material they are. Whites like socks, tees shirts and white towels. These things can be washed in hot water with chlorine bleach added. Jeans and sweats can stand up to hot water too. Delicates in cold on a gentle setting. Regular day to day wear can be washed in cold water.

Whites can deal with hot wash hot or warm rinse.

Light or Bright Colours do best with warm wash, warm or cold rinse.

Darks that are heavily soiled can deal with warm wash cold rinse, but for a regular washing, fade less over the long-term with cold wash cold rinse.

Pure cotton also does best in warm or cold wash and a cold rinse, because it can shrink if washed in hot water.

It's true that the temperature can affect the performance of most detergents, but that's why Tide now makes a "cold wash" formula, and Cheer or Woolite Dark Laundry perform well with cold water, but are formulated to prevent long-term fading if you do a warm wash/cold rinse.

Just wash them all in cold. It saves energy and they get clean and you don't have to worry about bleeding as much. Most water heaters don't put out water hot enough for sterilization, so I don't know why people think this. Also, Tide makes a cold water formula detergent, but it all works.

I suggest washing in cold water to prevent any problems like shrinkage or lint, but its your choice. Wash bath towels separtely to prevent lint getting on other items. Dark colors: turn inside out and wash cold separately. Sweaters should be turned inside out and washed cold, also. Anything else can pretty much be washed all together, unless you have a special preference. bedding usually is one load in itself, so definitely wash separate from other laundry. When drying: dry bath towels, sweaters and darks all separately from each other and other items. To prevent wearing out of items or shrinkage of denim-type fabrics, do not dry in dryer, let those items air dry and iron later. Hope this helps!
