It is very unfortunate that we are not required to change the names of the parties every few years. He was a Rep. But there is no way that we can call politicians republican or democrat if they were so more then 20 years ago.
Think about this.
John Kennedy
Huge 2nd amendment lover (as almost every president was before hand, and we were in a cold war)
Do you honestly think that he would be ok with abortion of any kind?
Richard Nixon
Republican
No way in hell could he get the Republican nomination now. He would be seen as too liberal.
If you look at most of the presidents earlier then 20 years ago and look at what issues were important to them, you will find that they would not be a big supporter of either major party today.

When Lincoln was in Congress, he was a member of the Whig Party. Later, he become a member of the Republican Party which was formed in the 1850s with a primary focus on the issue of slavery. He was a member of the Republican Party when he was first elected President in 1860. In 1864, he ran on the National Union ticket -- a combination of Republicans and Democrats who supported Lincoln's position on the Civil War.
Lincoln's parents were Baptist. Lincoln himself was more of a generic non-denomination protestant. When President, Lincoln generally attended a Presbyterian church.

Lincoln was the first Republican President. But Republicans back then were not as you see them today.
The Democrats back then had a bit more in common with the Republicans of today.

Lincoln ran on the Republican ticket & was elected President. The Republican party was not the same party that it is today. All politics have changed since the time of Lincoln.
He was a Christian, although not overly religious. I don't think anyone knows what religion he held, his being a Christian was enough.

Arguably President Lincoln founded the Republican party, yet as mentioned elsewhere, it is a contrast of night and day to the GOP.

Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and was raised by parents who belonged to the Baptist church but, Lincoln himself never was affiliated with any church but, read the Bible and lived by christian principles though didn't join any church, as far as I know.

He started his career as a Whig and later joined the Republican party. He was raised by Baptists and rented a pew in a Presbyterian church, but never joined a church.
