We lose idealism when we learn that ideals unfettered lead to disaster, that a society built upon idealism is a recipe for tyranny. So we learn to compromise and work together with people who might not share our ideals, so that the world will have a place for both those who agree with us in all things and those who do not. We replace totalitarianism and idealism with mercy and pragmatism.

We lose our idealism the same way rocks erode. Slowly, as time passes by. We lose our idealism as we see come to the gradual realization that we really can't change the world. That you feel small and helpless. You eventually throw yourself to the mercy of the system, becoming like other sheep: living the same lives as the ones before us have lived. I know it's sad but this is the truth, people learn to give up because they can't change the world, then later because they can't bargain with the world and in the end they just leave the world be. Which is why the youth are our future, because they aren't systemized yet. How can you see the cage if you're already inside it? So qudos to the movers and shakers of the past, present and future!

We lose ideals well frankly because we live, ideals are set into motion while we are young or younger. As we progress in life we are met by the harshness of reality that not all things are as we hoped and aspired, though ideals are never truly lost though but re-invented.
