Basically, a team tries to move the ball 10 yards in 4 plays by either running or passing the ball...Usually, after the 3rd play, if they haven't moved it those 10 yards, and gotten the first down(which gives them a new set of chances to run plays), they kick the ball away to the other team(which is called a punt)...If they DO move the ball close enough to the opponents endzone, but eventually get stopped on the 3rd play (3rd down), they usually try to kick a field goal, which is 3 points...Obviously the goal is to get a touchdown, which is 7 points...
Defense basically tries to stop the above from happenning...same concept, 4 chances to keep the other team from going 10 yards, hoping to force them to punt on the 4th down...

They flip a coin at the start of the game...whoever wins the toss will choose to either receive the kickoff or kickoff the football to the other team...if the team wins and chooses NOT to receive the ball...they get it back at half-time.
The goal when you have the ball is to score it in the endzone. You get 4 attempts to get in 10 yards...every time you make it over 10 yards you start over on you four chances for another 10 yards...most teams will kick the ball down the field on the 4th try(also called downs...1st down, 2nd down, etc...). Kicking the ball down field on the 4th down is important because it makes the other team get possesion farther away from your goal.
Anyways...wikipedia it....go too wikipedia.com and type in NFL...it will explain the rules. Too many to go over here! lol

The point is to advance the football to the opponents end zone while keeping them from doing the same. This is done through a system where you are given four chances to advance the football past the first down marker which gives you a fresh set of four downs or to the opponents end zone.
Welcome to the greatest organized sport that involves a ball.

Try Hockey - it has harder hits and longer plays between calls. A fun sport that is also under rated.
As for football, have one of your friends explain the process at the game, usually there are magazines at stands in the venue that will have some "basics" you can follow (in easy to read terms).
Have fun!

Try a web search. Sometimes experience will teach you more than anything. Watch more games. Pay attention to the announcer. Try how-stuff-works.com or some similar site.

Sitck to rugby, its more progressive. we have to charge the defense instead of passing the ball to another who already did.
