There is one mall relatively close to my house that I'd want to work at this summer or maybe next year-I'm 15, so nothing is really available for me yet and I'm a nanny now.
I wanted to work at one of the below.

-Old Navy
-Charlotte Russe
-Barnes and Noble
-Claire's
-Pac Sun
-The Buckle
-Payless
-Journey's
-Limited Too

I know it's thinking ahead, but what kind of stuff should I tell them in my application? What about interviews, what to wear?

So ANYONE WHO HAS WORKED AT ANY OF THESE STORES please share your experience, good bad or ugly.

Thanks so much!

1) List work experience that demonstrates how reliable you are.

2) If you get good grades - mention that to show that you can manage your time & have good self-discipline.

3) List any extracurricular activities & volunteer work that show your ability to work well with others.

4) Provide a list of at least 3 references (former employers, teachers, etc.)

5) Wear clothing that reflects the mood of the store but is a little bit dressy & formal.

For example, a cotton blouse w/ collar & sleeves & either a nice pair of slacks or a skirt for an interview @ Old Navy. You can add a jacket or sweater if the weather is a bit cool.

The key thing is to be neat & clean. You want to look like someone a customer would approach easily.

The bad thing about working at a clothing store is stocking it & re-hanging/folding everything that customers try on or touch. It's a constant battle to keep all the displays clean & tidy especially during a sale. The upside is the employee discount & getting first dibs on sales items.

Working at a bookstore is easier because you basically shelve books & run a cash register.

Next time you go shopping, chat up the sales people at the stores to find out what they like & dislike about working at each place.

Put applications in at ALL the places you mentioned, plus any other stores in your area. On your application, say that you are thinking about a 'career in retail' ...
When you pick up the application, when you take it back, and if you are called for an interview, dress NICELY ... a loose blouse, a nice KNEE LENGTH skirt, flat shoes. Have your hair combed and brushed neatly, and don't wear any 'studs' anywhere but in your ears. I know ... you may dress any way you want when you aren't working, but when you are applying for work, and for the first month, you need to be 'conservative' ... when they know you, you may 'branch out' and be more 'individual' but at first, 'conservative' will get you 'brownie points.'
In the application, don't but 'way too much information.' Tell them that you have been a 'nanny' (or a baby-sitter) but only because you were 'too young' for a 'regular job.' That will tell them that you KNOW you are applying for a regular job, and that you LIKE TO WORK. THAT is all it really takes to get any 'first job.' I know ... I used to be the one who did the inteviews and hired people ... not 'first jobs' but as psychologists and counselors. It's the same ... the 'conservative worker' got MY jobs, and I was 'the conservative worker' when I applied for my first job.
