I hope this is a joke. Getting inside of a refrigerator is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Don't do it. On most refrigerators there is a switch. When the door is opened, the switch is closed allowing current to flow to the bulb. When the door is closed, the switch is opened turning the bulb off. If you can find the switch, you can press it with your finger with the door open. Doing so you will see the light go off until you remove your finger from the switch. It might look like a button sticking out.

Actually, everyone else is wrong. There's a little, microscopic elf that lives inside your refrigerator. He shuts off the light when you close the door, and turns on the light whenever you open it. Now, consume mass quantities of beer and enjoy your weekend. And SHHH, the little elf is our secret. Only the Maytag man, you, and I know about him now....oh, and I guess whoever else reads this. Oh well...

If you open the door and the light is still on then it follows that the light must have been off when the door was closed. Surely you could have figured that out!!

No they do not. there is a little thing somewhere on the door that when the door shuts it pushes it in and that shuts off the light.
