Nothing too exciting about it, and the month of May is always left open just for Indy. They spend the whole month testing/practicing/qualifying before the race.

RE: the schedule -- I'd love to see way more venues this year, but I'll take what I can get!
You'd be surprised at the amount of activity there actually is between the Kansas and Milwaukee races! The "Month of May" at Indianapolis is a classic that will never change (I hope.)
In 2006, I drove from Victoria, B.C. Canada to the 500, spent the month there enjoying as many of the festivities as I could fit in, and attended the race. I doubt that, in my 58 years, I've ever had so much fun... (I STILL can't get the smile off my face!)

Month of may is big in Indy so they need the whole month to qualify the 33 car field. As for the schedule it is sad MIS is gone from the schedule this year but hopefully they will come to some agreement in 2009. I hope that they put the schedule out to fulfill the sponsor and fans needs with a announcement possible for the 17th event. At chicagoland it sounded like negotiations were very much in full swing for a 17th event most likely on the west cost somewhere.

back in the day there used to be 60 to 70 people trying out for the 33 spots on the grid, it really did take a month of qualifying and practice time but now its just another irl race so i don't see why they cant run a race or two in may, being as tony george already killed all the other traditions that made it take a month

They always take a month off before Indy for qualifying. Yes they could get in a tune up there maybe like Milwaukee Mile before it instead of after but they need to build up Indy.
