in england, there was a general system of primogeniture where the first son inherited everything, second son went into military, 3rd into religion, and after that they basically had to figre out what to do themselves, tradesmen or farmers basically
those later sons with no future in england would probobly love to come, as many area gave land freeley for coming to a colony, and where it wasnt free it was extremely cheap
riches or even just to escape poverty in england would have brought a good many over to the colony

There were a multitude of reasons why people came to South Carolina during the Colonial period (1670-1776). Some came seeking freedom to practice their religion, and some came to escape poverty and overcrowding in European cities. Many were given small land grants (50-200 acres) to come here and settle so as to be able to hold the territory from French, Spanish and Indian invasion. Others were already wealthy and were looking for a good investment by starting up a large plantation and exporting their rice, tobacco, indigo, timber, sugar, etc back to Europe. These "gentlemen planters" became extremely wealthy, unfortunately at the expense of others, but that's another history lesson for another day.
