I pay the same rate but only have access to about 85% of the gym, while women have 100%. Now I know the reasoning behind this but still it seems sexist to me.

Geez some of you; I'm not talking about bathroom/locker room space but a separate exercise room.

ProfessorC-Don't even go there. If it was a mens only section they would be sued. Perhaps that's what I should do...

Lioness: The room contains weight machines, cardio machines... Basically like a mini gym inside the gym. How do I know this? I sneaked in there when nobody was in it. Now the "manager" told me it was to give women privacy when they work out (men stare).

It is indeed sexist - you should write a formal complaint, if it is ignored, take it to the top level instead of just the branch.

You're right - if men had a men's only section, they would be sued and feminists would be outside with plaquards & sandwich boards squealing about patriarchal discrimination and boohoo blah blah...

I know what you're talking about. My gym (Gold's) has one. From what I could gather (by reading in between the lines when I took the tour of the gym before I joined) the idea is to sort of compete with the women's gyms like Curves. Some women (especially if they're overweight) want to workout without being judged, and I guess they feel more comfortable in an environment that's mostly other women. So regular gyms offer some privacy so that more women will join.

Is it sexist? Do you have adequate and equal opportunity to work out? Are you deprived in any way? Is your experience at the gym somehow lessened because that 10x10 space exists?
If so, sue.

The two largest gym chains in the world, as examples, are Golds and Curves. Golds is owned by Robert Rowling of TRT Holdings. He's a noted Conservative and Bush supporter, born with Texas tea and a silver spoon in his mouth and a troglodyte attitude about women. Curves Board of Directors and their CEO, Gary Heavin. are male. The problem with many men in business is they are sexist and social troglodytes and do not care about what's healthy for society or about equal rights. They care only about their own self-serving interests and making a buck off any fool, male or female. The customer gets whatever the customer wants, even if what they want is unfair to others. That's why more socially responsible adults investigate the ownership of their gyms and give their hard - earned money to less patriarchal plunderers of society.

i'm a stickler for perfect wellness middle etiquette. I generally attend a wellness middle and that i think of that there are particular issues human beings would desire to do to be considerate of others. speaking on a cell telephone whilst understanding is impolite. it fairly is a distraction for those around you, who are not attempting to pay attention yet are being distracted through the guy speaking on their cell telephone. on the wellness middle i flow to, existence Time, cell telephone use isn't even accepted interior the changing room, so why might or not it particularly is accepted around human beings attempting to pay interest. And definite, if every person is able to do aerobic and communicate on the telephone with out dropping a breath, they might desire to step it up some notches and get to sweating.

The question is "Do you check out women at the gym?"

I say "yes, everyone does it.."

But there are women who are not ready to style for the men, so they want privacy. Let them work out and in their own time they will join you of the other 85%.

If the women's section is for PRIVACY then you will have some problems. I am sure there are pieces of equipment women are not allowed to use!

If you threaten to sue - then you might find that the gym splits 50-50. If I owned it thats what I would do!

Hmm. yeah, not sure how I feel about that. I understand that people might want a space to work out in where they're more comfortable with their bodies, and a same sex environment might do the trick. But the men should have the same opportunity.

If it really bothers you though, you should take your business elsewhere. You can't expect anyone to take your complaint seriously while you're still handing over your money. It gives the impression that it doesn't bother you THAT much.

This is a very common thing at health clubs because women will pay extra to work out without having men around.

Is it sexist? Absolutely. But no one seems to care much less do anything about it.

Incidentally, the according to IHRSA (International Health And Raquet Sports Association) which is the organization to which most health clubs belong, the number one reason women will join a health club is because they think it seems clean. The number one reason that men join a health club is women. So, most clubs will try to keep the place clean and keep cleaners visible.

Do they have a men only area? If not they are sexist, if so they still are if your paying the same amount for less then the same thing.
