No, it is not true. You have heard something from people who heard something from other people who heard the Mayan calendar 2012 story and also some unrelated asteroid stories about possible impacts that will not happen after all, and they have mixed these stories up into one where an asteroid hits in 2012. But it is all just a mix-up. No asteroid will hit in 2012 or any other year. There is always a possibility of an asteroid hitting Earth at any time, just like there is a possibility of you getting in a car accident at any time, but we cannot know when it will happen. But unlike a car accident, astronomer can calculate paths for asteroids and in the last few years the big thing has been looking for asteroids that are in orbits that will hit Earth in the future. And they can predict where asteroids will be in 10 or 20 or even 50 years. So far, none has been predicted to actually hit earth, although some will come pretty close.

On January 31, 2012, 433 Eros is expected to pass Earth at 0.1790 astronomical units (1 astronomical unit is the distance from the Earth to the Sun). This, in astronomical terms, is very close, but it will still be almost 17 million miles from us. You may remember 433 Eros as it is the asteroid that was visited by the NEAR Shoemaker probe, which orbited it, taking extensive photographs of its surface, and, on February 12, 2001, at the end of its mission, landed on the asteroid's surface using its maneuvering jets.
This near Earth encounter with an asteroid and several other thoughts have given rise to a lot of "Armageddon" speculation about 2012. See the second reference below for information regarding these.

Meteors and small objects enter the Earth's atmosphere every day, by the hundreds. Most burn up in the atmosphere long before they reach the surface.
As for a large-enough asteroid to destroy the Earth, you heard wrong.
There is no asteroid that can be seen by the best telescopes anywhere close enough or in the right orbit to hit Earth in 2012.
There was one, called Aphophis, that was originally thought to be on a course that would impact with Earth in 2036, but additional observations have confirmed that it won't hit us.

they people who claim these things must have some source that the general public does not. astronomers have mapped a good number of asteroids, and projected their future routes. i haven't heard of any asteroid that's destined to crash into earth in 2012.
yeah yeah yeah. i know. 2012 nutheads will say things like "yeah, but we haven't mapped out ALL asteroids". well, for a group that so clearly states they base their beliefs off facts, where is the evidence that points to an apocalypse in 2012. there is none, other than the mayan calendar and a few other silly things.

While this may be true Scientists have been studying ways to destroy a deadly asteroid before it reaches the Earth. So don't be alarmed they have plans to destroy these things, possible by some nuclear attack on the asteroid to crush it letting all the pieces be burned in the atmosphere which will probably cause a wicked meteor shower.

First a planet will hit us in 2012, now an asteroid?
What are these people coming to?
I personally think we're going to create a stable strangelet and kill us all by being turned into strange matter.

You heard?
Instead of coming on here saying 'i heard' and expecting us to solve your riddle, tell us who you heard it from. Tell us the name of the person and the name of the asteroid.
Can't do it?
Well, imagine that.
The next time you hear something, check out the validity of your source. Try not believing everything you hear. Try getting some facts about what you 'hear' before coming on here and claiming the end of the world is near.
Here is a site you can go to the next time you 'hear' of an asteroid that is coming to kill us all... it will save the rest of us some time.

Hello PopStar...
Hey, who knows? There are rumors all over the place. Most rumors are just that...false stories.
But, it is fairly certain that if Hillary Clinton wins the Presidency in November of 2008, the world will never
be the same and probably the USA will turn upside down.

Yes, as David said you have a chance. The rest will have to work on surviving the "winter" that comes when the dust blots out the sun for quite a while.
