In 1987 I was a victim of the Whittier Narrows earthquake. My home was damaged to the tune of 25% of its resale value. Most of my possessions were destroyed. It was at that point that I realized what was really important. Everyone I loved was safe.
Most of my possessions are just things. Some are quite valuable. I'd give them all up if necessary. However I prefer to at least have a home. It doesn't have to be as nice as the one I'm in. But they can have the rest. I can't take it with me after all.
Sometimes they are more trouble than they're worth. They affect how others perceive me, and I don't like that.
Why do I keep them? Excellent question. Basically because I earned them though hard work.

I am sorry my valued treasures are too valued and I am not willing to part with them. I have given up the most valued things I ever had, and what remains I must keep or lose what remains of me. I have a necklas and wind chime that were my sons. I have a gold watch that was my moms, I have a diamond ring that was my grandmothers. I have another wind chime one of Ryan's girlfriends gave me. And I have my satin pillowcases my mother made me before she died. I would not be willing to part with any of these and really they would not hold the sentimental value to anyone else. Items to me Priceless.

My valued "things" are valued to me, for their beautiful connections to people I've known & know. They have associations that came from many journeys. While some--or many!--people say: "Oh I'd love to have your ships lamp! Your spanish galleon! Your pianophone!" they are looking at the exterior, (magic as that is), but never in the depth that I do. It's impossible that anyone could value them as much as I do.
Do I "need" them? Not to survive physically; for the fulfillment of seeing them & all my wonderful experiences in them, I "cherish" them. They aren't any "trouble."
I don't believe this question has anything to do with comparing values of "things" to the value of llife. So, I won't go there.
This is about THINGS, right? No, I wouldn't part with any of them. They're with the only person who can value them most.

I'm pretty sure I value my life more than anything else.
Although I'm also sure I'd give it up if the moment called for it.
Still my reasons for giving up my life are very distinct, I doubt I'd do it even to save a loved one.

That would be my last three answers, or my last three hundred answers for that matter. The more I get rid of them, the more I have them. So how do I answer your last question, then? I don't hang on to them, honest!

I don't place much value on 'things' so it's a kind of a meaningless question to me.
