So I plan on getting a beta for my 5 gallon tnak.
Do they like ornaments? I once saw a betta at my LFS sitting in castle! I'll be planting the tank with hygro plants and also love crowntailed varaities. re they harder to take care of then regular bettas?

Good for you for keeping your betta in a 5g tank, what do you already have in there or what else are you planning on keeping in there? When choosing tank mates remember that anything a fish can fit in it's mouth will be assumed to be food. 5g is pretty small for a community aquarium but you could probably get away with a betta, 4 neon tetra, and an ottocinclus to control any algae.

As for decorating, your betta will probably like the plants more than he will ike the ornaments, but if you like ornaments put them in, after all it is your tank :). Don't worry about crowntails, they are beautiful bettas but no more difficult to care for then the more common veiltail bettas. Good luck.

Bettas are quite shy and ornaments will provide a nice escape for them from any startling movements or noises. Along with the plants, try to get some tall ornaments that they can "chill" behind. Bettas DO NOT like small bowls and will only be healthy with multiple cleanings every week. Bettas originate in the LARGE rice paddies of Thailand, so the puddle idea is wrong too... Bettas will fight other Bettas or fish that look like Bettas so avoid fish with long, flowing fins (Gouramis, Angels, and certain Tetras). It is much more likely that the Betta will get picked on by its tankmates because Betta fins make a perfect target for nippy fish. Avoid fin nippers like Tiger Barbs, Cichlids, Danios, Serpae Tetras, and other hyper fish. For some "friends" for your Betta, try 3-4 White Cloud Minnows, 405 Neon Tetras, or some Pygmy Cories.

I breed bettas too and they don't seem to mind ornaments . Some pet shops sell betta tanks with a theme , a office, a bank ,a play ground etc. I would not put one in with a ornament that turns or spins as the fish would get injured.Crown tails are the same species so they don't require any care different than any other betta.

I have had quit a few Betta fish in my life so i am kind of like an expert i guess u could say anyway some of my Bettas have liked a ormament but most don't so u might want to try to put a little one in there for a bout a week or so and see how your fish reacts to it
keep in mind Bettas like small bowls since they originaly live in pudles, and never ever ever put a Betta in the same tank as any other fish or a nother Betta and not even by a nother tank becuase once i put my Betta in front of my merror and it tried beting it's self up so i had to move it
just always remember they don't get along with other fish and a Betta will fight another Betta intill one of them dies
ya really freaky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

betas do like ornaments, they like swimming around them and sometimes the big ornaments tht reach over the topof the tanks make a support-like surface for a male bettas bubble nest. just to tell u, i hope ur not putting many betta males (or females for tht matter) 2gether becuz they are very competitive and will fight to the death!! its very sad to see a beautifal betta die like that. crowntails arent any harder to take care of than regular bettas, in fact i breed them! good luck!
