I just bought a bike and I'm new to things... Anyway, as I was riding around I noticed that other riders stick their hands out and kind of down whenever they ride by me. I don't know why or what it means but it's got me really curious.

It's nothing bad, it's just saying "Hi, and enjoy your ride my friend" Make sure you return it back to the rider and there is nothing to stop you from doing to them first. HAVE A SAFE RIDE MY BROTHER.

That's a low wave.
Just a greeting. May have other feelings attached.
Some wave above the bars, some below.
2 fingers down is "2 wheels down". Some say the number of fingers is the number in the group (if there is one).
Some don't wave at all.
For some more insight, look through the questions in this category. There have been a lot of recent answers about how people wave, and why.

Welcome to the world of 2 wheels. Be safe, not sorry.
Another sign the police are ahead is the rapid slapping of the helmet with the left hand.

In the UK, it tends to be a nod rather than a wave. Its a Biker thing, and its nice to be acknowledge as part of the family. Watch for the Headlight Flash to signal Police ahead.

99% of bikers will greet you. It has always been here since I have been riding.

We're basically sayin hello mate! It's up to you whether you give us a wave back or not! csburridge has got a very valid point - if you get a frantic thumbs down or a "circle" sign it should mean the coppers are round the corner with one of their inaccurate speed "guns." If you get these signs from a car driver and there's no'one there it's cause the car driver does'nt have a clue and is, basically, a ****.

They are just saying "Hello, brother". Give them a wave back. If they flash their lights, slow down because there are cops ahead of you. You are part of the riding family now... enjoy.
Ride Safe
