Does the program still show on the tape while the TV is off?

No, it does not need to be on. The vcr should have a tuner in it, and will record from the antenna (or cable), not from the TV.

Nope! One thing has nothing to do with the other. The tv simply displays what's being watched and/or recorded. But the VCR is the one doing the recording, so whether the tv is on or off doesn't matter.

You will need the tv on in order to set the timer on the VCR, but once that's done, it's up to you whether to have the tv on or off.

So those "experts" who say it depends on the VCR make or model are just-plain wrong. The TV and VCR are separate from each other. The VCR does the recording and playback, while the TV simply displays the picture you're recording or playing back.

As long as the tv & vcr are 2 separate units then you can shut the tv off. It's the vcr doing the recording so you really don't need a tv attached at all, only for viewing your recordings later.
