I listed a refurbished Toshiba Protege M100 on eBay last night for $499 plus $49.99 postage. I bought it fro eBay a few days earlier for the same price but recieved a new laptop as a gift before it arrived, so I re listed it to make my money back. I got up this money and somebody had bought it, but they had also sent me and email declaring that they wanted to pay for the item NOW and they wanted me to post it overseas to a friend of thiers. Now the bit that is a little concerning is that they want to pay $790 for the computer! Why would they want to pay more then I am asking? They have offered to pay by money order and I will not be posting the item until I recieve the order and have cashed it! But do you think this is some sort of scam?

This scam has been going on for years. You accept a foreign M.O. that your bank credits to your account initially and only debits from it (along with a penalty) a week or more later when it is found to be phony. In the meantime, you've sent the difference between your price and the amount "paid" with real money, so you're out even more.

If someone wants to play games, learn a colorful new vocabulary before telling them what they can do.

Also, report this to the eBay administrators, so they can take action against this scumbag.

Yes, this is a new scam that has popped up. If you deposit the check and the funds are not there to back it up you are held responsible by your bank. Be certain this is a scam if they want to send you too much money and then have you send the difference back to them.

Since they are wanting you to send the computer overseas they may be trying to get you to send the computer somewhere where they US version of the software is illegal and only the international version can be used do to cryptology in the US software.

Its a scam. The money order is a forgery. It will take 10 days after you cash it to find that out.

The other victim likely posted feedback before they found out they had been taken for an expensive ride.

I would be highly suspicious. For one thing, it may cost more than 49.99 to ship overseas, then there may be postal regulations that can be complicated. What kind of person offers to pay more for something than you are asking for the item? Did you check this persons feedback?

Foreign money order may take a long time to clear .
Many are returned as fake / forged or otherwise fraudulent .

If you do NOT ship until it has cleared , then you have no worries . . .
Unless your bank charges you for returned items that you have deposited .
Some institutions do charge for items you bounce
AND items you deposit from others that bounce .
