There are indeed a lot of con-merchants around .. however a lot are totally above board ...

OK, this is how a friend operates :-
1) He has relatives (wife's family) who can physically check out the goods and company he is dealing with .. (quality shipped is often NOT the same as quality of 'samples' :-) )
2) His payments go via his relatives ..
3) His relatives organise the shipping via a 3rd party Co., not connected to the first Company, who pick up goods from the factory gate..

EVEN SO .. sometimes items have been 'short shipped' ..
His relatives have confirmed all items loaded into the shipping container and have seen it sealed at the factory gates .. so he assumes Containers are sometimes 'inspected' by customs and some-one helps themselves. .. he now has any expensive items packed first (i.e buried under cheap stuff)

Sometimes items have arrived damaged .. yes, he has a claim against the shipping Co.. .. but it takes MONTHS of chasing for only a few 10's of ££ return ...

As a 'rule of thumb' he estimates 'only' a 'tiny' 10% loss through shipping ... (he says he's heard of people whose containers have just simply dissappered)
