I don't understand, you say that you get a Blue screen of death(memory dump thing), and that the same laptop doesn't let you use the mouse, or are they two different computers?

The first problem sounds like a dying hard drive. Contact retailer.

About the second problem:
If the mouse says it is Vista compatible, you shouldn't need to download anything from the internet. It should be plug and play.

But anyways, do you have the instruction manual? What does it say about Vista?

First problem I can't help with, wait until a tech guru answers that part, or take your laptop to a repair shop.

Second question:
It's a compatibility issue. I had the same thing, my mouse was not VISTA compatible. I had to buy a new one. I ended up buying a wireless Logitech optical mouse. It has a plug in usb. No problems since then, as long as I remember to replace the battery now and then....
