I recently applied to a job and was asked about a security clearance. What is this and why or for what is it used? Any help will be useful- thank you.

Every job has a need for security clearance
Some hardly any, some involving police checks and background checks to see if what you put on your application was the truth.

Apparently this company deals with sensitive information. This information is classified with a security clearance. In order to have contact with the information, you need a security clearance as high, or higher, than that which the information is classified.

Some examples of security clearances, going from lowest to highest, would be

For Official Use Only, Secret, Top Secret

A security clearance enables you to work with certain information or products. It is basically having a background that is clean of legal problems. Some jobs, such as Nuclear Power plants also check your credit.

i had one in the military and have one now...it can be intrusive but in the end if you qualify it'll mean more bucks/better job opportunities
