this happens to me when iTunes does an upgrade. If i stop iTunes and restart, it usually fixes the problem. If this doesn't do it, try rebooting your system. If that still doesn't do it, it means that your iPod isn't being detected. See if it shows up in your "my computer" list (assuming you're on a PC. if it's a mac, i just don't know enough to help you on it). If it's not there, you have a problem with either your cable, your iPod, or your system's USB port. Try a different port, then try a different cable (borrow from a friend). Hope this helps. do u mean ur sidebar?
did ur ipod ever show up on the sidebar before?
make sure your plug is completely plugged in and if it doesn't work, then go to the apple store for help.
sometimes it depends on the computer type, an an apple computer is more guaranteed to work than others, I have a friend who has the exact same problem

if it appears on ur pc yet doesn't appear on itunes, make the folders u have inside the ipod visible(i think they are hidden as default) and sync with windows media player.
