I am a crocheter but I would do a google search for beginner knitted purse pattern. Play around with the words. You'll find something.

I usually find mine by going to Google. Type something like "knitting pattern purse free" into the search box and hit enter. I've found it works best to put the nouns first.

http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/ is one I use constantly. Also log onto www.knittinghelp.com b/c their forum is good as well as www.knittersreview.com . Both forums allow you to ask this question and others for more advanced knitters to help out.
The TV show Knitty Gritty had a simple clutch pattern on it last week. Go to www.diynet.com and type in knitted purse.
Good luck.
