...for the type of film that you appear to be looking for, you might give the campy 1975 drive-in satanic horror shocker, "The Devil's Rain" a good look; replent with an all-star cast, including William Shatner, Ida Lupino, Tom Skerrit, and in his first motion picture appearance, a very young John Travolta, this film was supposedly, exploitively and personally endorsed by veteran satanist Anton LaVey, who also, amusingly enough, plays a bit part in the film...as a priest, no less!!!
...the ending of this film is most outrageous, and has to be seen to be believed!!!
...check it out, here!!!

A REALLY scary movie is Burnt Offerings - Karen Black - 1976. A very creepy movie with ghosts is The Innocents (from the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James) - Deborah Kerr - 1961.
The TV movie It - 1990 (made from Stephen King's novel) was scary, too. Something Wicked This Way Comes - 1983 with Jason Robards was another one.
You may also enjoy the movie made from the story The Fall of the House of Usher - Vincent Price - 1960.
You may also like The Haunting - 1963 - Julie Harris (not the newer version).
There's also Trilogy of Terror - 1975 - Karen Black, especially the third story.
I keep remembering others, but I'll conclude with Johnny Depp's version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (creepy); The Ring (the first movie); Poltergeist; The Others - Nicole Kidman (only if you haven't seen it yet); and Night Gallery (1969) - Joan Crawford, Roddy McDowall (the movie which has 3 different stories & it's the one with Roddy McDowall that got to me).
I just saw your addition. From the way you typed your question, I didn't understand exactly what you wanted to know. BTW: 1990 and 1976 are closer to 2002 than 1920, and if you haven't seen the movies I've listed you shouldn't call them cr*p. Personally, I think some of those listed by me and others are better than the gore-fests that seem to be the more recent "horror" films.
That being said, I'll add: From IMDB's 50 top rated horror films (these are the only ones from 2002 on up that were on the list):
Planet Terror (2007)
Grindhouse (2007)
Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
My Name is Bruce (2007)
Survive Style 5+ (2004)
I'll add The Ferryman (2007); The Messengers (2006); The Ring (2002) - as I already mentioned; In the Dark (2004); Frailty (2002); Population 436 (2006); The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (2003); The Gravedancers (2006); Stephen King's Desperation (2006); 5ive Girls (2006); The Amityville Horror (2005); Dreams in the Witch House (2006); and An American Haunting (2006).

ck1, GREAT answer. Burnt Offerings is a hell of a scary movie. I think we might have the same taste. I'd also add The Changeling with George C. Scott, and the original make of The Wicker Man. And I agree Trilogy of Terror is terrific, especially the famous last tale with the Zuni doll.
Oh yeah, and Rosemary's Baby.
